Chapter 28

One look at the Devada Forest was enough to tell me that the world of Soluminos had totally skewed my idea of what a forest was. The Darkwood surrounding the village of Borava lived up to its name. Evergreen darkwood trees filled it, growing as closely together as they could, their purplish needles blocking out most of the sunlight overhead and leaving the forest floor blanketed in shadow. That kept a lot of undergrowth from growing beneath the trees, leaving the space fairly open and easy to navigate, and the trees and needles muffled sound. Walking beneath the canopy felt like entering another world, one remote and distant from civilization.

The Devada was nothing at all like that. It was a hardwood forest, with tall but spindly trees whose leaves let plenty of light and rainfall through to the ground below, choking it with smaller bushes and shrubs. The trunks were mostly thin and widely spaced, at least toward the edges of the forest, and the sun still beat steadily down on us from above, barely impeded by the scraggly canopy overhead. To me, it barely qualified as a forest; it was more like a stand of trees that just happened to spread out for miles.

“There’s probably not enough water here to support a full forest, John,” Sara supplied helpfully in response to my silent criticisms.

“There’s an entire river just back there, Sara,” I pointed out.

“Yes, but unless it floods a lot, it’s probably not watering the grasslands nearby. That’s why they’re grasslands; grasses like that don’t need much water and have deep roots, so they can tap water deep underground to get the little they need. Trees are a lot thirstier, so they only grow where there’s a lot of water close to the surface. This area is in a shallow depression, so it probably collects more rainwater than most, just enough to grow some trees but not enough for a forest like the Darkwood.”

I didn’t answer; the simple fact was, Sara obviously knew a lot more about the subject than I did, as she did about most subjects, and I didn’t really care about learning more–at least, not about the ecology of a forest. I was far more interested in her discovery of the origin of the Imperial Seal, but the simple fact was, there really wasn’t much more to discuss.

“It sounds like she came here on a mission, completed it, and moved on, John,” Sara had told me when I questioned her later. “The stories and legends are actually pretty common after a powerful Inquisitor’s visit. If you go back to Kuan or Soluminos someday, you might find legends about yourself, as well.”

“Do you think Ujali’s still alive?” I asked.

“The question doesn’t really mean anything, John. Ujali traveled the Doorverse, and the Doorverse can lead you pretty much anywhere in space and time. Everything that ever has happened and will happen in the Doorverse is accessible to you right now through the correct door. That means that,
